Ink Works Wine Co. Winemaker Josh Baker has been crafting wines on California’s Central Coast for more than 15 years. As a Biological Sciences major at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., Josh never envisioned he would end up in the wine world. “It turns out I have an affinity for alcoholic beverages. I started drinking wine in college when my best friend graduated three years ahead of me and entered the industry. It was free – cheaper than beer. By the time I was a senior, we were brown-bagging wines on each other and really starting to nerd-out on wine.” Josh cut his teeth at an industrial winemaking factory in Modesto, Calif., before making the move to the Edna Valley to focus on learning the craft of fine-winemaking. After a rapid ascent in the Edna Valley, Josh ventured both north and south to extend his expertise into the Paso Robles and Santa Barbara County areas. Josh’s established boutique label, Baker & Brain, has garnered praise from the world’s most well-known critics. Ink Works aims to meld Josh’s knowledge of the Central Coast’s growing regions with his passion and prowess for blending friendly, approachable wines with mass appeal and realistic pricing. When not working, you’ll find Josh cooking on his Big Green Egg or spending time racing RC cars with his 6-year-old son, Jack.
Arjay Gomez cannot remember a time when he didn’t draw. He began his artistic journey sketching Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters as a child growing up in Bakersfield, Calif. Furthering his love of putting pencil to paper, he took art classes in high school and continued his passion for art through college. After graduating from California State University, Bakersfield with a major in art and a minor in business, Arjay found himself with an offer to apprentice at his favorite tattoo shop. “I got my first tattoo when I was hammered drunk at Naked Al’s around 18 years old and just kept getting tattooed through the years. Just as I was about to graduate college, the shop that I usually got tattooed at was looking for an apprentice, so I took my portfolio in and they hired me on the spot to start apprenticing. A year later, I was tattooing full time and the rest is history.” Arjay has worked with some badass tattoo artists like Eddie Stacey, Manual Valenzuela, and Johnny Woodruff. He now works at First Amendment Tattoo in Bakersfield and has a client following from all over the US. He is an award-winning tattoo artist for color work and back pieces and has been published in various tattoo and lifestyle publications. In his spare time, Arjay plays on an ice hockey team, does watercolor and loves to sketch Pokémon, Dragon Ball Z and other cartoons with his 6-year-old daughter, Amerie.
